Self Care Tips

Take a News Snooze

Karen Rowinsky - Wednesday, October 03, 2018

If you are like me and your car radio is tuned to NPR, you check the New York Times headlines on your cell phone, or you don't fall asleep until The Daily Show is over, then this tip is for you. With an important election (aren't they all?) approaching and the availability of 24 hour news channels, Twitter, and Facebook, the news is right in our face all day and all night.

News SnoozeAs good citizens, many of us feel the obligation to keep up with what is happening in our country and our world. Some of us use news as a way to trigger our activism on certain issues. But sometimes we need a break from partisan politics, natural disasters, the horrible things people do, and the state of the economy. This is especially important if your past history includes events that are in the news lately; sexual assault, immigration, health insurance, and social justice.

I'm not suggesting taking a news snooze for an extended period of time. Try it for just two weeks. If that seems impossible, how about two days? I hope you find it as refreshing as I did.

Self care may sometimes be putting on blinders and ear plugs to cleanse your mind and soul.
