This is a lovely time of year. Newly planted flowers are still fresh and perky, lawns are bright green, and trees have leafed out into a shady canopy. It's a perfect time to enjoy your neighborhood before the dog days of summer leave even the most cared for yard looking dry and parched.
So many times we drive or walk through our neighborhood distracted. We don't notice the beauty around us.
This week, take the opportunity to notice your surroundings. Delight in the variety of flowers that are flourishing. Become aware of the infinite shades of green of the grass and trees. Observe the glistening sunlight and the cool shadows.
You can do this as you slowly drive your car through your neighborhood but a leisurely stroll has added benefits. Walking will give you the opportunity to take in the fragrance of the flowers and rich earth. You will be able to hear the sweet songs of the birds and the funny scolding of the squirrels. Walking may also give you the opportunity to compliment your neighbors who are providing this beauty for you to enjoy.
Enjoy your neighborhood at different times too. Early morning, it is cool and refreshing. Mid-day might provide you with the sounds of kids playing and the aroma of a freshly mowed lawn. In the early evening you may catch a beautiful sunset and sense the serenity of the day winding down.
Whether you live in the city or in the suburbs, enjoying your neighborhood can provide you the chance to relax, breathe, gain perspective, and experience beauty. Self care can be the simple act of stopping and smelling the roses, literally!
