When I was in practice in Kansas and new clients walked into my waiting room, they often commented on how relaxing it felt. Most people coming to a therapist's office for their first visit are feeling anxious. With that it mind, I decorated mine with calm colors and tried to make the furnishings comfortable and inviting. However, what I believe played the biggest role in their relaxing experience, was my table top fountain.
Surrounding yourself with soothing sounds is a wonderful way to relax yourself. If you don't already have one, treat yourself to a small fountain for your office or home. They are inexpensive and it is easy to get into the habit of turning them on or off. Besides their sound, it can be calming to watch the water drop and splash.
If water is not your thing, try soothing music in the background. If you like the outdoors, you can find recordings of outdoor sounds that appeal to you. A great source for this kind of music is Steven Halpern's Inner Peace Music.
