I usually prepare my weekly tip ahead and schedule its release for Wednesday morning. This week, I decided to wait until we had election results so I could address feelings that may have been brought up.
The election has held most all of our attention for the past year. It has been emotional, divisive, and intense. It seems to have brought out the best in people and the worst. I wish I had something eloquent to say or some words of wisdom to pass on to all of you--those who feel jubilant and those who are feeling despair.
All I can say is that now, more than ever, this is a time for self care.
For those of you who are happy with the results of the election:
- Be thankful. We are incredibly fortunate that we have the right to stand up and vote for what we believe in.
- If you put energy, effort, and money into making it happen, celebrate your success.
- Practice compassion by being respectful of the feelings of people who are struggling with defeat.
- Cut out the negative noise. Give yourself a break from the rhetoric of this election cycle. It's been a tiring and stressful time for all of us.
- Self care can be paying attention to being the person you want to be in the big picture, not just in the moment.
For those who are disappointed with the results of the election:
- Give yourself some time to grieve, either alone or with like-minded friends; in person or online.
- Watch out for symptoms of overwhelming anxiety or depression and reach out for help if your thoughts are scaring you.
- Pay attention to what your body needs; your mind, and your spirit too. Don't torment yourself with too much TV, radio, or online rehashing. Remember your usual stress management tools and use them.
- Spend some time outdoors. The trees, animals, sun, moon, and fresh air will give you some perspective and can be soothing to experience.
- Cherish each glimmer of hope, each little kernel of pleasure. They will remind you of your strength, resilience, and energy.
- Self care can be remembering that today is the first day of the rest of your life and you have the power to try to make it how you want it to be, for yourself and others.
