Write Your Own Manifesto

Karen Rowinsky - Wednesday, September 06, 2017
Our intentions are what bring purpose, meaning, and significance to our life. So many times, however, we have intentions that we either don't act on or fall by the wayside when the going gets tough. Many of us keep our intentions to ourselves for fear of losing face if we fail to meet our goal.

A manifesto is a public proclamation of intention. The intention may be global in the way you intend to live your life:

  • I will treat people with respect even if they do not reciprocate.
  • I will find something to appreciate each and every day.
  • I will be as kind to myself as I am to my friends.
Your manifesto can be more specific:

  • I will have a job that is meaningful to me.
  • I will find a way to enjoy making cold calls.
  • I am moving to a different home by the end of 2018.
Make your manifesto as bold, beautiful, and courageous as you can. Don't be wishy-washy as in, "I will try..., I think I will..., I want to..." It should be strong and emphatic.

Developing a manifesto and sharing it may be just what you need to increase your chance of succeeding in your intention. Writing it down is important. Place copies of it where you will see it as a daily reminder. Say it out loud so that your ears can hear it.

Your manifesto can be shared with your community through social media, a small group of supportive colleagues, or one special person. The key is to make it public.

Self care is giving ourselves every opportunity to live by our values and principles to achieve what is most important to us. Our manifesto is a proclamation that we are practicing self care.
